No Tobacco No Betel Nut?

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 · 0 comments

Tobacco Free & Betel Nut Free. I bet a lot of you are wondering what is Betel Nut? Betel Nut: The dried, ripe seed of the palm tree Areca catechu (Palmae), a native of Ceylon and Malaya but also can be found in the Pacific Islands. The nuts, slightly larger than a chestnut, have a faint odor when broken open and a somewhat acrid taste. Betel nuts are chewed by the inhabitants together with the leaves of the betel pepper, Piper betle (Piperaceae), and lime. The mixture discolors and eventually destroys the teeth. Frequently, habitual chewers of the nut are toothless by the age of 25. The seeds contain a narcotic that produces some stimulation and a sense of well-being.  Local Islander chew this nut usually with Tobacco, Lime and a Betel Leaf.  So when they say this area is also Betel Nut Free is not because of the smoke, its because of what they do after they chew.  When chewing this blend of Betel Nut, Tobacco and lime it creates a lot of saliva in your mouth which most people just spit it out on the ground or a bottle and can!  Most people find this very gross including myself, so I am happy to see a sign like this in this area on Guam!
